My friend, the esteemed Texas Senator John Cornyn had it exactly right when he called for Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation, when Holder appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Sen. Cornyn (himself a former Texas Attorney General) didn’t mince words: “The American people deserve better; they deserve an attorney general who is accountable and independent; they deserve an attorney general who puts justice before politics.”

Eric Holder is a disgrace. President Obama picked a leftwing ideologue for Attorney General of the United States. As a result, we have what may be the most corrupt and politicized Justice Department in our history.

Next week, the House Oversight Committee will vote on a resolution to hold the A.G. in contempt of Congress. This has happened to a cabinet member only three times before.

At issue is Holder’s failure to turn over documents relating to Operation Fast and Furious. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms operation was ill considered and fraught with inherent danger to citizens of both Mexico and the US.

The bureau decided that by selling firearms to straw men, knowing they would be delivered to Mexican drug cartels, they could nab major gunrunners. In all, over 2,500 guns were “walked across the border,” where they found their way into the hands of some of the most murderous men on the planet.

To make matters worse, ATF (a bureau of the Justice Department) lost track of the weapons, which included 34 sniper rifles with a lethal range of 2,000 meters. One of the Fast And Furious guns was used to murder Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in Arizona, in December 2010. The weapons were used in at least 200 killings in Mexico.

As a result of Fast and Furious, only 20 insignificant gun-smugglers (all “known to the authorities”) were indicted and fewer than 700 weapons recovered. Both the president and Holder admit the operation was flawed, providing little comfort to the family of Brian Terry. And these are the people always demanding more gun control.

Holder testified under oath that he knew nothing about Fast And Furious until sometime in April 2011. But an internal Justice Department memo, leaked by a whistleblower, shows that the attorney general was getting weekly briefings on the operation in July 2010. In the course of a 15-month investigation, Congress has demanded more than 10,000 documents. Holder has stonewalled every step of the way.

This isn’t his only malfeasance. Holder refused to indict leaders of the New Black Panther Party for a clear case of voter-intimidation in the 2008 election.

He’s also turned a blind eye to the party’s Internet postings calling for the murder of George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon Martin. J. Christian Adams, an ex-Justice Department official who resigned in 2010, testified before the U.S. Civil Rights Commission that a deliberate decision was made not to prosecute civil rights violations involving white victims.

Now, Holder is trying to overturn new state voter ID laws, on the ground that they discriminate. Against those who try to vote illegally?

The Attorney General is the nation’s chief law enforcement official. As such, he should be beyond reproach – a shining example of fairness and equity. He should be above partisan politics.

The time for talking and stonewalling has passed.  Eric Holder must go.  At the very least, an Independent Counsel should be appointed to investigate this matter and those found to be responsible should be prosecuted.
