Candidates Race to Battlegrounds After Feisty Debate

The presidential candidates and their running mates hit the battleground states running Thursday, with Barack Obama trying to maintain his lead and John McCain trying to shake it following their third and final debate the night before.

With less than three weeks to go until Election Day Wednesday night, McCain tried to recharge his campaign with a volley of allegations directed at his rival's honesty, judgment and empathy for tax-burdened Americans.

Seated just a few feet from McCain, Obama calmly responded to every charge, accusing McCain of going negative in the final weeks of the campaign and distorting the facts about his past associations and record.

McCain plans to build on his argument Thursday in Pennsylvania, while his running mate Sarah Palin hits Maine and North Carolina. Obama starts his day in New Hampshire, and Joe Biden will make a stop in Ohio before flying to California.
