California Pastor Sentenced for Pro-Life Stand!
Pastor Walter B. Hoye, founder of the Issues4Life Foundation in Oakland, CA, which is dedicated to “addressing the issues surrounding the inviolability or sanctity of human life in the African-American community,” was found guilty on January 15, 2009 for two counts of “unlawful approach” in front of an abortion clinic.
His ordeal began last May when he was arrested while carrying a sign with the words: “Jesus loves your baby. Let us help.” He peacefully handed out two pro-life leaflets to women considering an abortion and was found in violation of city ordinance Title 8, Health and Safety Chapter 8.52.
On Friday, Feb. 20, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail (substituted by community service) and a fine of $1,130. The district attorney was seeking a year in jail and incurrence of a $2000 fine but the judge imposed a "lighter" sentence.
Prior to the arrest, Pastor Hoye was the plaintiff in a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the very law used to convict him. The law is entitled the “Access to Reproductive Health Care Facilities Ordinance” and prohibits picketers from coming within 8 feet of a woman entering an abortion clinic. With the aid of Life Legal Defense Foundation, Hoye filed suit in federal court under the grounds of violation of the First Amendment, which gives Americans the constitutional right to free speech and to peaceably assemble.
Why is the media silent about this outrage? Where are the pastors across America who should be standing with this courageous individual?
Pastor Hoye made this statement following his sentencing: “While I cannot return to the abortion clinic on 200 Webster Street and while this horribly unjust law aimed at Christians stays in effect, I will continue to work towards the defeat of what I call Oakland’s “No Christ” zone by other means within the legal freedoms that are still available to me…“The Verdict Versus The Victory” Will Continue. My shield of faith is still up. I believe we will win! May God get the Glory! May God’s Will be done! May God’s Son be Revealed in me!”
