Analysis: Expect Perry, White to avoid 'insider' role as governor's race ramps up

AUSTIN – With the elections two months away, incumbents across the country are scrambling to survive an anti-establishment, pro-outsider tide of voter discontent.

But in Texas, Republican Gov. Rick Perry – a 10-year incumbent who defines the state's political establishment – has largely escaped harm. One big reason: In a year when political insiders are an endangered species, Perry has taken care not to sound or look like one.

The pattern will define the fall campaign for governor that kicks off in earnest with Labor Day. Democrat Bill White will denounce Perry as a corrupt and lavish-living career politician. But the architecture of Perry's campaign is grounded on one theme – the rise of the tea party and voter anger over the economy and government spending.
